Ho‘omälamalama 2008 Summer Youth Program

Nä Pua No'eau, the Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children, is presenting "Ho‘omälamalama 2008 Summer Youth Program", a 2-week non–residential, educational enrichment program from June 16 - 27, 2008 for Native Hawaiian students who are currently in grades kindergarten through fifth. Held on the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (Manono)/Hawaii Community College campus. A variety of classes are being offered to students of Hawaiian ancestry currently in Kindergarten to grade 5.

This year as we continue on our journey around the mokupuni or island of Hawai‘i, we come to district of Ka‘ü. “E Hi‘ipoi I Ka ‘Äina Aloha – Ka Moku O Ka‘ü” (Cherish the Beloved Land – The District of Ka‘ü). We will learn about the past, present and future of Ka‘ü as well as its natural and cultural resources in several classes including; Hawaiian culture and language, art, science, language arts, mele and hula, physical education. We will have fun filled activities and exciting learning experiences about the history, physical features, culture, and human treasures of Ka‘ü. Other activities include a health fair by Hui Mälama Ola Nä ‘Öiwi, a visit to Alu Like's Kupuna Program, and a huaka‘i (field trip) to Ka‘ü. The Safe Drinking Water Branch of the Department of Health will present information and activities on our precious water resources to equip our keiki to safely enjoy nä pono o ka ‘äina (our natural resources). We will conclude our program with a hö‘ike, when the keiki will share their experiences about Ka‘ü through mele, hula, artwork, and oral presentations with their ‘ohana and friends from 10 am – 12 noon on Friday, June 27th.
